Winter Program in Visual Arts and Architecture in Havana
This intensive two-week program invites you to walk the city of Havana to immerse yourself in its history, artistic and cultural expressions. The course includes a creative photography workshop taught by specialists at La Poderosa Media Project. Previous experience in photography is not required, however, basic skills in the Spanish language are recommended.
Any student currently attending a high school or university may apply (not limited to the US). Cuban specialists at the Centro de Estudios Martianos will offer lectures on art and architecture during at historical moments, with an emphasis in the late colonial period (19th) and 20th centuries. During this time, the city expanded significantly with buildings of architectural significance which today are considered world heritage sites. Students will participante in visits to historical sites, buildings, houses, centers and schools of art, galleries and museums, as well as guided walks through Havana’s historic center, the Chinese neighborhood, Centro Habana, Vedado, Miramar, Playa and East Havana. During the weekend we will visit the social service center Centro de Servicios Sociales y Educativos in the city of Varadero to enjoy its spectacular beaches. In addition, students have the opportunity to voluntarily assist the social service work that the Center carries out with children and older adults.
Through the creative photography workshop, students will learn to use the camera to create visual representations (photographs) and textual (written short essays) about the city in ways that are creative, meaningful, ethical and responsible. The final project for the course consists in developing a photo essay. Daily reference readings will be assigned related to the topics and visits of the next day.
