Niños Envueltos

July 13th, 2011

We are excited to publish the first episode of the La Poderosa Media Project Cooking Show, “Niños Envueltos”, which was filmed during our 2011 program in Bahía de Caráquez, Ecuador. Starring our world famous chef, Doña Mariana, and hosted by Maddie Saragusa, this episode details how to cook the meal that was by far the most requested over the course of our six week program, but in fact, is probably one of the easiest to make. So, with the help of a FlipVideo camera, some eggs, flour and milk…we have put together this video in hopes that you can replicate this dish at home.

And if you have not yet subscribed to our YouTube Channel, LaPoderosaVideos, check it out!!! Here, you can see our previously published shorts and (soon) our 2011 productions.

Dogs of Bahía

July 1st, 2011

1. Corina

She is the muscle of the watchdog duo that keeps La Poderosa’s headquarters safe from the fruit sellers and water deliverymen who roam this town. The proud mother of seven children who have all grown into productive, up-standing citizens in the community, she know exactly what’s needed to keep this house running smoothly. She always has everything under control, snooping around, listening in on the neighborhood back fence talk when necessary so as to stay informed of the happenings in Bahía.

2. Luna

The nurturing counterpart to Corina’s role as a disciplinarian, her white fluffy curls mirror her playful disposition. Her keen ear quickly picks out the friendly footsteps of La Poderosa team members and immediately she shoots out of the front door bounding towards, running in circles and in spirals, overwhelmed with love and enthusiasm. She can always be found where the people are, and with just one smile she’ll become your companion for life.

3. Ladybug/Chloe/Daisy/Sandy

Don’t be fooled by this Spaniel’s gentle exterior, she’s a wet-nosed businesswoman with an ear for the unmet needs of the Bahía market. Seven years ago she opened her Pingüino ice-cream shop with only one tricycle and a dream. Now they can be seen all over the beaches and city streets. A human-lover to the core, she has eight of her own who in return for her care, keep the shop safe from any curious ruffians sniffing about at night.

4. Balto/El Lobo/Max

This outdoor enforcer stays true to his wolf ancestry, maintaining his menacing reputation about Bahía. A city landmark, he’s the law on Padre Laennon Street lounging where he pleases, day and night, directing traffic until duty calls. And when it does, he’s quick to jump into action, waking from his slumber, snapping up with his ferocious smile, prepared to fight tooth and nail in order to keep his territory safe.

5. Herman

As Bahía’s local deep thinking canine, Herman is rarely seen outside of his solitary study. Passers-by know that behind that barred window, shrouded in the half-light of his thoughts, sits this furry philosopher. But keep your distance. Visitors are not welcome at this hermit’s sill. They say, curiosity killed cat, and any attempt to see into Socrates’s cave leads to his transformation from silent shadow to fierce warrior.

The Video Workshop

June 17th, 2011

Jorge Teaching Production

Juancarlos’s Scriptwriting Workshop

Alejandra Teaching Camera

The classes with the students in the video workshops are a major part of the program.  Initially, we thought we wouldn’t be doing much with the video classes, just assisting here and there.  But we actually attend class and participate in note taking and class activities.  Students are encouraged to read aloud their ideas in class and participate.  While us American students are teaching them and giving them confidence to express themselves in a place it will be appreciated, they are teaching us by speaking with us and sharing with us their language.  In the classroom, all students are equal.  It’s not like we’re some privileged students coming in and improving the lives of underprivileged kids, because they’re helping us just as much as we’re helping them.
