Over the past five years La Poderosa Media Project has provided Latin American youth with the knowledge, tools, and skills needed to produce short films and documentaries. La Poderosa Media Project uses two integrated programs to foster self expression and intercultural communication. The Video Program supplies underprivileged youth with technical skills and practical knowledge through digital media workshops. The Language Program brings American college students into contact with these communities while teaching them about Latin American culture and the Spanish language. The combination of these two facets is what makes La Poderosa Media Project a unique nonprofit organization. Mission: La Poderosa Media Project is a nonprofit organization that encourages empowerment, cultural competence, and intercultural translation through digital media and
service learning programs in Latin America.
Goals:
- To facilitate the self-representation, creative expression, and economic advancement of
Latin American underprivileged youth through equal access to multimedia training and resources. |
| Video and Language Programs: La Poderosa Media Project consists of two interconnected programs:
THE LANGUAGE PROGRAM is focused on American college students and provides them with individualized Spanish classes taught by highly qualified instructors. This is an immersion program that provides 60 hours of instruction in the Spanish language and focuses on contextualizing local culture within a Latin American context. The program includes a substantial grammar and writing component, which is complemented by conversation classes and interaction with the local population. THE VIDEO PROGRAM is focused on Latin American youth (high school age) and provides them with the knowledge, tools, and skills needed to produce short films and documentaries. Through intensive multimedia workshops, we teach both theory and practice, focusing on the three stages of filmmaking: pre-production, production, and post-production. Students learn about script writing, acting, filming, sound recording, editing, among other elements related to the production of short films. By the end of each workshop the students will have learned how to create, film, and distribute their own stories. We have facilitated the production of more than 10 short films and documentaries, improving with each successive project. |
